In a modern ordinary town, there lived a girl named Wendy Everly. She lives a pretty average life, attending school, and living with her brother and aunt. Wendy never felt she belonged in her family. As her mother constantly accuses her of not being the child she gave birth to, she starts to question whether this is actually true. Her life feels like a mess and on her sixth birthday, her mother loses control and tries to kill her. She is then sent to a mental-disease hospital. No matter how much her brother tries to convince her that it was her mother’s fault and not Wendy's, she can’t help feeling that it is not the life she was meant for. While her siblings have blonde her and blue eyes she has brown eyes and curly messy hair. Everything about her is different.

Wendy’s brother Matt is a strong character of the story. Wendy causes issues in his life due to her getting expelled from school many times but he is still eager to stand up for his sister. He is devoted to looking after his sister, no matter what her mother thinks. As he loves her so much, his life seems to evolve around her, and he feels worried about her safety all the time. He would go to all lengths to save his sister rather than living his own life.

As for the main character Wendy, she is an intelligent but troubled girl , yet something that has constantly distracted her is her mysterious ability to control anyone’s mind, to change the way they think. She has always felt frustrated about this un-explainable power, but she is also curious. Little did she realize the large world existing and waiting for her, in which she is in-charge of Forening, the home of people named Trylle; people just like her. Forening is a dystopian world, where a fracture of the story is set, it is a luxurious kingdom of magical people.

Her life is changed forever when a handsome boy named Finn arrives at her bedroom window one night to explain to her about her past. For the first time ever, she discovers what no-one has told her about, the reason she feels incredibly different. She is lead to believing in this place where she is welcomed. It is a difficult choice to make as she must leave her beloved brother and aunt, who truly love her.

Finn and Wendy have and instant connection from the moment the meet. As their friendship grows we see that their position in hierarchy forces them apart. But their bond is too strong no-matter how much they try to stay away from the idea of being together. Their relationship shows that having friends who love you and a willing to help you are truly good friends and will always be there to lend a hand no matter what.

The construction of the story starts with a flashback of an important scene. It is an emotional scene and straight away, readers notice that Wendy is treated brutally at a young age.The story then moves in a chronological order from Wendy’s current life to her new life in Forening. The book is also written in first person through Wendy's point of view. The issues in the story include the importace of good relationships with friends and family and that true love for others is more important than loving them for wealth. Mainly the story was romantic and focused on strong relationships between the main characters. This book is the first of a trilogy and is styled in a paranormal literature genre.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a page-turner and kept me interested from beginning to end. The author writes in a really interesting manner and I laughed at some of the happy parts in the story. Especially at the end of chapters, I noticed it always ended at an interesting part making me read on to find out what happens. I recommend this book to teenagers and young adults. The story line is amazing and readers will bond well with the characters through moments of distraught and moments of triumph. I also felt a lot of emotion in the characters themselves and the relationships are well described. The imaginative setting also created pictures in my head. Overall, I finished this book fairly quickly and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
